  • Veterinary Nursing students

There are two routes to becoming qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN): vocational (college) training or higher education (university degree) qualification. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). More information can be found here.

We are currently accepting applications from degree student veterinary nurses at Riversmeet Vets. Here’s some more information about what a placement might look like for you at our practice.

Degree student nurses experience

Ideally, 1st year students, however, we will consider 2nd and 3rd year placements. This will be discussed further in the interview process, and we may also ask for references. We would also prefer to liaise with the placement organiser as soon as possible to discuss training expectations.

Opportunities available for student nurses and working hours

We strive to provide student nurses with ample opportunities to cover as much of their work-based assessment during their time with us. Our students will be located at our Tamworth site, where they will gain great hands-on experience and supportive training.

We expect the students to work 4 x full working days if working on block placement.

  • 8am - 6.30pm or 8.30am -7pm based on a rota
  • No weekends are expected.

We are also flexible with pupils who attend university or college throughout the week.

What we expect from our student nurses and what they can expect in return

We expect our students to be involved in all aspects of the practice, and training will be based on an assessment of the student's competence in their clinical skills.  All students will be supported in their training by a Clinical Supervisor.

Occasionally, we may need to evaluate a student's experience and ascertain whether we can accommodate their desired level of participation. Our primary focus is the care and welfare of our patients and we must ensure that all individuals involved in their treatment have the necessary expertise to perform the required tasks. You can trust that any decisions made will prioritise the best interests of our patients.

Travel and accommodation

Students will be responsible for their own travel arrangements to our Tamworth site, as there is no staff parking available.

If you are travelling by car to Tamworth, there are pay and display facilities located close to the practice. The nearest one is Moat House Car Park. If you are travelling by train, Tamworth train station is under a 20-minute walk from the practice.
